The In-between times are rich with archetypal energies, healing potential and revelations of things we normally don’t notice when life is moving along as “normal.”
In fact, this is the meaning of the word apocalypse, to reveal, to make known what was previously covered up. These revelations are not often all that comfortable. In Buddhist teachings, the word that is used to describe this in-between is “bardo.” This is the time of life where we journey between points in time, whether it be (re)birth, the death journey, the moments of life that birth and death frame, or the various kinds of esoteric gaps where we experience the crumbling of one way of life or identity and the known becomes a mystery. These gaps are precipitated by a loss, crisis, illness or even the initial point of recovery from addiction, codependency. We encounter multiple dimensions of experience of loss and change from the thing that’s been lost, the way life was as we knew it, our relationship to these things and our own identity that formed in relationship to what has been lost. We stand on new ground that feels groundless. How we navigate this is the invitation into the crossroads, the place where our wounds reveal themselves and we not only encounter these painful things but also our relationship to them...the cause of our suffering. How we are in the in-between is reflective of how we are being in relationship to ourselves, which is deeply reflected in our relationship to life around us. Modern life is manufactured to distract us from our relationship with ourselves, to maintain that point of separation within. This is why the bardo or in-between times, or the Underworld Journey and/or Dark Night of the Soul, as called in the West can be so disorienting. We meet ourselves as we are here We know this place exists, but what of a map of it? Is this a place to slay dragons or discover how to love the parts of ourselves we have cast aside into caves? This is the human soul’s archetypal journey to wholeness. A spiral journey into the depths and out again, over and over. The hard things are the places we return to over and over again, to mine the richness of our depths for our light, gifts, resilience, strength, faith, love and hope. This is one of the richest opportunities to learn how to meet what we are discovering in the gaps of our lives with compassion and love. To work with the things we keep saying we will stop doing tomorrow or pay attention to later…becasue those are the very things that are weighing us down and taking our power away. It’s hard to love yourself when you keeping things that you know you shouldn’t; that are not in alignment with who you are really meant to be or how you want to truly be doing yourself. Living in compassionate, conscious relationship with yourself is mending this internal relationship….to meet the inner Self at the crossroads and understand how to navigate this space consciously, to transform what is hard with love. It is more simple than we think. In this four week online journey, we will explore the terrain of the in-between and how to navigate this unknown time with consciousness, compassion and love. Class Sessions:
Week One - Finding Ground in the Multidimensional Experience of Change What we root into during times of change or crisis is very important. This helps our minds, hearts and nervous systems to feel more regulated. It gives us access to more of a loving Mother function that can hold us through times of change, loss and the unknown. Week Two - Navigating the Shadows with Love When we meet our hard things, feel our deeper wounding or see parts of ourselves we try to push away or pretend aren’t there, we are expressing our unconscious attitude towards the parts of ourselves we do not know how to love. We will explore methods for relating with these shadows with love and compassion, rather than something we need to fix or hide from. Week Three - The Art of Inner Mothering The inner mother is a rich internal complex. A mixture of how we were mothered and the cultural mother. The internalized feminine aspect of our psyche. We find her in the often unconscious attitude that we carry towards ourselves and how we take care of ourselves during difficult times. We will explore conscious self-mothering and how can we harness this energy to cultivate a loving inner mother. Week Four - Finding Nourishment with Light in the Darkness The light is safe. We can access it all the time, even in the in-between. This is something helpful to remember this when we are navigating unknown, shadow-y spaces. The light of the Great Mother archetype is one that we can harness and use to nourish our hearts, nervous systems and bring in a sense of protection and security. You will also receive practices and guided meditations each week to support the journey work and teachings during the Zoom sessions. |
